BARBARA GOWAN
Barbara Gowan is an abstract painter based on the Isle of Wight.
She explores emotional realities through intuitive mark-making and pentimento. Sometimes areas are collaged with torn fabric or paper. The paintings are immersive in colour for emotional intensity. Broad brush marks contrast with fine sgraffito lines. The finished paintings glow and pull you into Barbara’s world.
Barbara also creates ceramic art pieces. The current series, Earthworks, focuses on a post apocalyptic vision in which the only objects left, as the earth heats up and dies, are pieces of fired clay. Sometimes these slab pieces are cracked deliberately during the drying phase. Other pieces have machine parts impressed into them as a memento mori to the human race.
