JAN FRITH

Jan works with time-based media and technology, usually combined with three dimensional objects or explored through interactive installations. Social commentary is often implicit within her work.

In July 2024 for Art-House-Life’s special focus on artificial intelligence Jan installed a sculptural ‘Feedback Loop’ of analogue typed data comprising public comments gathered about artificial intelligence.  This accompanied her film ‘Ten reflections on the threshold of change’ twinning thoughts about technology across different generations separated by a 25 year time interval.

Earlier in 2024, following her previous funded commissions at The D-Day Story museum in Portsmouth, Jan secured further Arts Council England funding to tour her ‘Sewing Memories’ work across three venues including Quay Arts, Ryde Library and Independent Arts.  ‘Sewing Memories’ comprises an interactive Singer sewing machine with embedded memories which can be read by turning the handle of the machine.  Jan worked with community groups of all ages who experimented and learnt to ‘Sew, Style and Upcycle’ pre-loved clothing and textiles, showcasing their creativity in a finale exhibition.

In 2020 Jan co-founded with fellow TRAC artist Violet Mareck, a contemporary art space @Arch_WindowGallery and the first of its kind in Ryde.  Together they have selected and curated work from over 60 professional contemporary artists across The Isle of Wight and beyond to support art visibility, cultural engagement and High Street regeneration.
